The Weatheralls Primary School

Knots

Knots challenges are an extra-curricular project designed to deepen our children’s understanding of our school’s five key threads that underpin and weave throughout our curriculum: Agency, Culture, Diversity, Democracy, and Possibilities.

This scheme encourages pupils to extend their learning beyond the classroom and celebrate their curiosity and motivation.

How It Works

Children across the school can take part by choosing challenges that match their current level of learning:

Level 1: Typically suited for Years 1–2

Level 2: Typically suited for Years 3–4

Level 3: Typically suited for Years 5–6

  • Within each level, pupils select a thread (e.g., Agency, Democracy, Diversity) that interests them.
  • Each thread offers a range of challenges grouped into bronze, silver, and gold categories.
  • After completing the three bronze challenges from one thread, children bring their work back to school to share and receive their Bronze Knot Badge. They can then move on to Silver, and ultimately aim for Gold.

Our aim is that by the time pupils leave Year 6, they will have a deeper understanding of these five key ideas and what they look like in action. This project also recognises and celebrates children who show agency by taking initiative and extending their learning at home.

How parents can support

  • Encourage choice: Help your child pick a thread that sparks their interest.
  • Provide ideas and resources: For example, if your child chooses Democracy, you might discuss voting or fairness at home.
  • Celebrate effortAsk your child to share what they’ve learned and praise their creativity and persistence.
