Medical Dietary Requirements
Medical diets are a very important part of our catering provision in schools. Chartwells monitor each recipe for the 14 most common allergens as recommended by the Department of Health and can create a specific medical exclusion diet for a child that eliminates one or more of these 14 common allergens:
- Cereals containing gluten
- Milk and milk derivatives
- Sesame seeds
- Sulphur dioxide and sulphites at concentrations of more than 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre expressed as SO2
If your child is diabetic, the nutrition team can also provide carbohydrate counts for your menu cycle.
If your child requires a medical exclusion diet you will need to obtain a letter from your child's GP, dietician or paediatrician stating which allergens need to be avoided. You will then need to complete a special diet request form, get it signed by the head teacher and forward both documents to the Chartwells area manager for your child's school.
The team of nutritionists will then create the medical diet for your child and a copy of this medical exclusion diet will be sent to you via e-mail together with a nutri authorisation form, an allergen report for the standard hot menu and a disclaimer form.
You may then choose between either (a) completing the nutri authorisation form and selecting from the special medical diet or (b) completing a disclaimer and choosing from standard hot menu.
NB Your child can't have a mix of both menus.
Once you have returned all the completed forms to the area manager the menu will be made available for you to select for your child.
A new nutri authorisation form will be sent to you every time the menu changes along with a copy of the new menu. The authorisation form must be completed, signed and returned before you can select from the new menu.
If your child or children do have food allergies and you do not wish to have a medical diet, please can we ask you to fill in the medical diet disclaimer declaration, confirming your choice not to have a medical diet for your child or children.
