The Weatheralls Primary School

Art Exhibition

On Wednesday 10 July, parents and children joined us to admire the impressive artwork created by our pupils over the course of the year.  The exhibition showcased the artistic talents of the school’s 400 children, aged 3 to 11 years.  Artwork on display included food sculptures, clay birds, portraits, and various other creative pieces – many inspired by the work of other artists.

Art Exhibition 2024

In Key Stage One, the younger children in Year 1 created sculptures in the style of renowned artists Alberto Giacometti and Barbara Hepworth. Their intricate pieces showcased an understanding of form and structure.  In Year 2, children studied the work of Wassily Kandinsky and created artwork with vibrant colours and bold shapes reflecting his abstract and innovative style.

In Key Stage Two, Year 3 ventured into the world of the ancient Egyptians, using fabric to recreate ancient symbols and motifs.  Attention to detail shone through in their beautifully crafted pieces.  The children in Year 4 embraced the world of literature by creating Beowulf comic strips using charcoal and pencil. Their imaginative illustrations and storytelling abilities were on full display, bringing the epic tale to life.  Year 5 explored the realm of three-dimensional art by creating intricate beetle sculptures inspired by artist Darrell Wakelam. The skills and techniques showcased in their work highlighted their artistic growth and technical skills.  In Year 6, children embarked on an artistic journey focused on activism, they created thought-provoking collages and charcoal artworks that addressed important social issues including civil rights and the peace movement.  The entire school collaborated on a project exploring the senses through drawing. This collective effort brought together pupils of all ages, developing creativity, cooperation, and a shared artistic experience.

In addition, Year 5 children also had the opportunity to showcase their textile design skills in a unique 1970's inspired fashion show.  The children modelled the t-shirts they had created on the catwalk.  Adding a musical element to the event, the school choir entertained attendees with a selection of songs from the 1970s, adding nostalgic and uplifting soundtrack to the celebration of the Arts.

The art exhibition, the school’s first, proved to be huge and joyful success, highlighting the talent, creativity, and artistic growth of the students that attend the school. The event highlighted the importance of arts education in nurturing young minds and fostering a love for creativity and expression.
